According to the Biomass Resource Atlas produced by Centre for Science and Environment, surplus biomass that can be collected agro waste is alone about 145 million tonnes per annum. Data also shows that that there are about 40 different types of agro residues available in large quantities.
A recent innovation of Energy Advanced Sustainable Technologies Foundation (FEAST) is Sized Multi-fuel horizontal Continuous Combustion Device (SM-HCCD) which addresses both the health hazards and energy conservation aspects of biomass based cooking. Agni Mithra and Agni Sakhi stoves (SM-HCCD technology) have been developed by Prof H S Mukunda, founder of FEAST and retired professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science.
With these stoves, TIDE is looking to facilitate efficient utilization of biomass while also creating rural livelihoods. We have conceptualized a strategy which would work at the first stage of biomass collection and value addition at the village level (collection, aggregation, size reduction and compaction). This would be done in parallel with pilots to demonstrate acceptance of size reduced, dry biomass in fuel-efficient cook stoves (Agnimitrha and Agnisakhi stoves) that save 50% biomass.
Through this initiative, TIDE would like to develop technical and societal processes in fuel aggregation and create rural incomes by bringing non monetized bio-mass fuel into formal fuel supply chain.
